Day 70!
Hello! Thank you for following my journey so far, as I am on Day 70! YAY!
Healing really is measured in weeks and not days with spinal fusion. You will have your up days and down days, but oddly enough as the weeks go by, things progress and eventually get better. Or, at least I hope they do in your case, if you too have had spinal fusion. It really is a patience and time game of healing. You don't feel like you are making progress because each day you have new tweaks and pangs, along with some new discoveries. For instance, when I met with my virtual PT, I asked her to critique the way I walk. She noticed my right arm didn't swing as much as my left and we talked about how I compensated for so long with my injured back that lead me to guarding my body when I walked. I told her I felt like something was off, but I couldn't place it. I am so glad I mentioned something. I am very concerned about the way I walk as I would like to eventually get back to as normal as possible. She mentioned that when she first saw me walk, I lifted my legs really high in the air, possibly because I had drop foot and that I adjusted for that. I let her know that in the two short weeks of her recommended exercises and stretches that I can feel a huge difference and am truly glad and thankful for her guidance.
I know I said my insurance covers the virtual PT, but it always makes me a little uneasy when I open my insurance and see the claims and payments to the company that provides the service. It's a lot of money! Spinal fusions and the care needed afterwards is very expensive indeed! Thank goodness for insurance and co-pays and max deductibles!
The sun has hit the PNW and it feels good to be able to go out and practice walking in the warmth. It seems to always hit just about when summer feels like it's going to end. School is starting and the leaves on the trees have the slightest tinge of yellow and red starting. It's the bitter sweet beginning of the end of summer. Soon it will be fall and we'll be all snuggled up in sweaters and rain coats.
There are a few items I emailed my surgical team about- one being my arms falling asleep when I sleep on my side. Also, sitting on harder surfaces, or a not so padded chair cause my groin to burn, and go numb. When I lay down I can still feel my rods and screws and need to rock back and forth until I get to a comfortable spot where I don't feel them. All were normal and the RN will relay the information to the care team and follow up with me if there are any concerns on their end. I am expecting that the most of it is normal as I had an extended amount of time living with my condition before I got the fusion and nerves take time to heal afterwards. Either way, I will keep on keeping on and updating you as I can.
Mass was wonderful today and prayed three Holy Rosaries.
